Teach Cooking Skills to Children- Essential Points to Consider

from: Maxx Family Life

Probably you have noticed your kids buzzing around the kitchen, asking you what the meal is for lunchtime. Or they try to wear your apron, get some cooking utensils and pretend that they are the best chefs in the world.

If your kids exhibit such behaviors, it is because they want to learn the art of cooking. There are different questions that they want to ask you about your kitchen tasks such as why there is a need for meats and vegetables to be placed on fire or why garlic and onions are always included in most dishes that you cook and prepare for your everyday meals.

Cooking is a lifetime skill. It can be used to further enhance the taste of the foods you prepare for the family. Moreover, it also opens careers such as being the chef, whether of a restaurant or a first-class onboard cruise dining place. If your kids show great enthusiasm in cooking, there is always a possibility that they will have careers in the cooking industry. Or they may opt to just render their cooking expertise for their own families.

So are you ready to teach your kids the art of cooking? Read on the preceding discussions and hand them the skill that they can use when they grow and have their won families later on.

Make them Involve More in the Kitchen

One of the initial steps in teaching your kids cooking skills is to make them involve in actual meal preparation. In this way, you will make them feel that you need some sort of helper in the kitchen. Let them make arrange the chicken with lettuce sandwiches and decorate the plate where it will be placed. They will be able to say at the end that your kids helped you in preparing such food. This will make them happy for they have made a difference in your kitchen activities.

Cooking Cleanliness and Responsibilities

Teach them the reality behind cooking -- they must be responsible enough for every food that they will prepare to the table. Show to them that it takes some time on preparing a certain food and it is not automatically prepared. Also, make them aware of the role of cleanliness in cooking. "Cleanliness is next to godliness", as the proverb says.

Nutrition First

Cooking various dishes always come with consideration on its nutrition content. Make them aware that too much fats and sugar in foods are not healthy. Instead, give them the importance of preparing vegetable and seafood-based dishes and make them aware that these possess essential vitamins and nutrients that their body needs to keep them active throughout the day.

Safety is a Must

If your kids love to assist you in your cooking tasks, always remind them that safety also comes as a priority in the kitchen. They must learn that there are specific safety precaution guidelines that must be followed to ensure that no one will be hurt while they are cooking the food. Below are some of the safety measures that your kids must learn:

* Always keep out from hot objects or surfaces, especially on the microwave oven, hot pan, and the stove.

* Always use safety gears such as pot holder and apron when carrying hot objects.

* Never hold sharp objects such as knives and scissors. Remind them that cutting tasks are for adults only.

* Use hair net (both for boys and girls) to avoid hair touching the food or raw ingredients.

* Teach them proper sanitary procedures to ensure the cleanliness of the food they are cooking.

Make your kids active in the kitchen and let them experiences what it takes to be a little chef!
