Toys that Help Kids Love Science
from: Maxx Family LifeWe all know that kids love to explore. For children, the world is amazing, filled with tastes, smells, sights and so many sounds just waiting to be explored. Science, with its many shapes and sizes, is an unlimited area of learning, and the sooner a child will travel down the road of discovery, the sooner they will be set on a course to a lifetime of exploring and learning.
However, there are parents who are concerned about purchasing a science kit for junior, worried that the substances may not be safe, or a child is too young to appreciate what can be done with them. In addition, if one of the substances get used up, it's very hard to find a replacement. This results in a quite expensive toy is quickly relegated to a forgotten corner of the closet Is this what usually happens? Definitely not, with the four great toys available that helps kids really get into science!
The first toy isn't so much a toy as it's a living, breathing science marvel. If you've heard about electric fish you'll remember going to an aquarium and listening to the slightly distorted sounding clicks and impulses. You can now bring this marvel home and it's called the Elephant Nose fish! An easy to keep pet fish, this animal does emit the electric charges that can be heard with a device called a piezoelectric earphone available at electronics stores.
The fish themselves are easy to care for and feed, but it's important to note they must be kept in groups of three or five, and the top of the aquarium must be sealed tight since they could jump out of the tank otherwise. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with these amazing creature and even listen to their “conversations”!
Another toy is the great standby that you as the parent may have already enjoyed when younger; the crystal growing kit. They're now very inexpensive and available for each age group and education level.
A third toy is, of course, a classic chemistry set. Fortunately, manufacturers have smartened up to the needs of young children and have provided colorful kits with supplies that are easy to replenish and allows younger children to learn and explore for many hours. Thus junior scientists as young as four years old can easily get to know the wonders of science. Of course, for mature kids there are state of the art kits that teach them how to make their own hydrochloric acid -- perhaps a nerve racking for mom and dad, but certainly a lot of fun for the kids.
Finally, another classic favorite: an ant farm -- children have always enjoyed these little critters. And yes, some will indeed escape. But for the hours of fun and learning this toy offers, this risk is certainly worthwhile. There's no better way for junior to learn up close about these fascinating creatures that seems capable of adapting to anything Mother Nature and humans can throw at them.
As you can see, science toys are certainly a way to introduce kids to the wonderful world of science. It's definitely benefitial for children if learning is tied to playing in order to avoid tedious memorization and boredom. If you have the time, why not sit in with your child as she or he explores? It's safe to assume that you, as a parent, will probably become just as enthralled in this amazing learning process.
