The History of Teddy Bears

from: Maxx Family Life

Way back in 1902 when President Theodore Roosevelt was in Mississippi settling a border dispute between Louisiana and Mississippi he went on a hunting trip. People in the hunting party decided to tie a small, black bear cub to a tree for him the President to shoot, but upon seeing how helpless the small bear was Teddy Roosevelt wouldn't shoot the poor little bear.

The following day a cartoonist by the name of Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon depicting Roosevelt refusing to shoot the little bear cut. When shopkeeper, Morris Michtom, say the cartoon he asked his wife, Rose, to make a teddy bear to be placed in his shop window. Morris Michtom asked the President's permission to call the stuffed bear, Teddy and when the president agreed, the Teddy Bear was born.

During the same time period in Germany, a company owned by Margarete Steiff, was starting to manufacture their own stuffed bears, which were the first time stuffed bears made available to the public all over the world.

The popularity of teddy bears took off from this humble beginning. In the modern world, most children still have teddy bears. Toy manufacturers, teddy bear artists, and stores that sell teddy bears provide them in many different shapes and sizes. Gund(r) is one of the leading manufacturers of soft toys, along with The Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. You can check out their websites at: www.gund.com and www.vermontteddybear.com.

A lot of teddy bear artists have sites on the internet where you can view their teddy bears online. Teddy bears at www.tbears.de, are the some of the most expressive and unique you'll ever find.
