Preserving your Barbie Collection
from: Maxx Family Life: Kid's StuffIf you have a large Barbie collection and it's probably one of your most treasured possessions. Maybe you have some vintage dolls purchased NRFB (never removed from box) or you just own a lot of dolls you love to lovingly display all around your home. Of course, if you're like many collectors, you probably have a few showpieces you keep under lock and key, and a number of dolls you may have on display using a variety of shelving choices. Regardless of the size of your collection, you'll want to properly preserve your dolls and accessories, yet you might not know how to accomplish this task.
You've probably know many ways to display your dolls, and quite possibly know how to preserve your treasures. If not, here are some practical dos and don'ts for preserving your Barbie collection.
Preservation starts with a proper mode of display. Thus the first and most rule is to store your dolls away from direct sunlight. Sunlight will likely fade the colors of dresses, packages, while also contributing to the rapid ageing of rubber accessories. This is the prime reason for cracking along zippers and shoes that split. Sun damage can't be easily repaired and will certainly lessen the value of your doll collection.
You should store rubber accessories in separate little plastic bags which can be purchased at stores catering to collectors, numismatics, and even at arts and crafts stores. Keep in mind that rubber disintegrates and could also cause the disintegration of other plastics stored near it.
Next to sunlight, moisture is the number two enemy of your collection. Moisture in the air, moisture from the fluctuation of the seasons, moisture created by home humidifiers, and even cooking moisture can wreak havoc on your collection! While there's likely no way you can lock up your dolls in an airtight showcase, you can purchase some silica gel -- the little packets you shake out of new shoes you're taking out of their cartons for the first time -- and keep it around your doll collection. It will suck any excess moisture out of the air and protect your dolls. Of course, it won't help much in protecting your dolls from water through accidental means.
Don't give in to Internet fads that claim the best way to preserve a doll's white complexion is to immerse her in bleach. In fact, stay away from bleach because it will add to the deterioration of the doll and her clothing, rather than preserving the whites. In addition, bleach will damage plastic materials used when the doll was manufactured, and repeated application of bleach could put your dolls into a rather poor condition.
Don't rummage use questionable chemicals like Armor All, which some doll collectors use to create dramatic effect on the rubber portions of their displays. It will break down the dolls in time, even though it does a nice job on your dashboard.
Don't starch your doll's clothing because starch attracts insects! Don't fill your dolls with cob bedding, or any other material designed to take moisture away -- these materials also attract insects, vermin, and other undesirable creatures that make their nests in these materials.
It's obvious that preserving a Barbie doll collection is a serious task that should only be done by separating Internet facts from fiction and myths perpetuated by those collectors who will also pass on any email they get that asks to be passed on -- you know the kind. If you hear of a method of preservation that sounds too good to be true, or simply too outrageous to be genuine, err on the side of caution and contact a doll museum. Curators there should have the professional knowledge necessary to let you know if these latest methods are hype or can actually help you to keep your collection look great for many years to come.
