Displaying Your Barbies to their Best Advantage
from: Maxx Family Life: Kid's StuffUnless you're a little girl who simply enjoys her Barbies as a plaything, you likely would like to display the pieces of your doll collection. Let's face it, collectors never keep their treasures stored away in a locked box in the attic where the dolls gradually deteriorate and become dusty, buried with the cobwebs and forgotten.
No indeed! The odds are, if you're a collector, that you want to showcase the dazzling colors of the accessories, the vivid animation of her movements, and also the many outside accessories that have accompanied Barbie for decades.
Here are some helpful hints for displaying your Barbies to their best advantage.
It's a good idea to find a display area for your dolls since you can't really display anything that's lying down in an enclosed trunk. Find a shelf (if you have only a few dolls on display), converted closet (if you have more than a shelf's worth of dolls), or even a spare bedroom if your collection is sizeable). Do, however, avoid spreading your collection throughout a variety of rooms.
Rather than displaying your Barbie collection to its best advantage, you're actually turning them into clutter, competing for attention with other collectibles, design themes, and maybe even every day items. If you're lucky, you'll have a lighted display case that fits in with your furniture, which makes a wonderful backdrop to your collection.
Once you've prepared the perfect display area, make sure it receives indirect lighting. Never allow direct sunlight to be your source of light since it'll cause the vibrant colors of clothing and packaging to fade. The same applies when using artificial lighting. Don't use light sources that emanate heat since close proximity to the dolls will actually contribute to the deterioration of the many rubber and plastic components of the doll and accessories.
Don't be temptated to display your dolls outside of their packages or specially crafted display cases, since this allows dust and little bugs to collect on them. Dusting your entire doll collection regularly can become a bit of a chore, even in a climate-controlled environment.
Along with the dos and don'ts of proper display, also keep in mind aesthetic considerations. Avoid displaying dolls of varying sizes together. Small size differences are okay, but large differences in size just detracts from the dolls and focuses on the size differences alone.
If you have specific collections, such as those that deal with region specific paraphernalia or hobby specific accessories, group them together. To lessen great size differences in your dolls, why not display some in seated fashion, while others can be standing up but be sure to keep the color palette compatible since you never want opposing colors that detract the eye from the display and focuses instead on the incompatibilities of the groupings. In fact, why no download a color wheel from the Internet to get a few hints on how to display colors together in a harmonious fashion.
Discreetly place silica gel around the dolls, but out of sight. This substance guarantees your dolls' outfits won't rot -- especially if leather is involved. This is additional insurance even though you may object to having silica gel behind your displayed dolls. Just remember they're going to be the most vulnerable once they're taken out of their protective boxes!
Displaying your Barbies to their best advantage doesn't have to be a guessing game. With some planning and common sense you'll have a terrific display area that's an asset to any home. Harmonizing with your furniture and other display items means you'll cluttered, but rather wonderful eye candy that enhances your room.
