Keeping Fresh for Marathon Shopping Days

from: Maxx Family Life

Throughout the year, you can expect three significant shopping periods whem there's going to be some marathon shopping days. These include the day after Thanksgiving, the day after Christmas and the tax-free shopping weekend. There are a lot of people who can be called serious shopers who really know how to spot a bargain. These are the people who maintain lists of people listing who gets what present -- in other words -- they're organized! Bet you'd like to know how you can become a veteran marathon shopper without completely passing out from total exhaustion after hoofing it all day long carrying your tons of shopping bags?

Here's how to do it. Get started training in the early summer by doing exercises and some weight lifting that will help with your endurance -- we're not kidding! Shopping is often a full body experience, so you have to exercise so you can train your entire whole body. Next, work with weights to build and maintain upper body strength which will be extremley helpful whe you're carrying all those shopping bags around. You might also consider joining a walking club, either outdoors or in a local mall. Remember -- you're got to get started with this training program at least two months or more before the next marathon shopping period.

Another devious plan is to break in new shoes at least a month ahead of time. All that walking througout the malls or even sidewalk to sidewalk stores is bound to take a lot out of most people who aren't prepared. After all, you're treading on hard concrete or cement floors which is why you get worn out. Do choose shoes that are comfortable and make sure they have proper cushioning and arch support. If you're not particularly fashion conscious, investing in a pair of nurse's shoes made especially for people who have to stand for extended periods of time is a super idea.

Okay, now we're getting closer to the day. What you should do the day before your marathon-shopping day is to carefully inspect all the sales circulars in the newspaper. Put together a game plan, that should include mapping out your route, plus where the best parking places are in the area, where the bathrooms and even restaurants are so you can stop and rest for a quick lunch. On the day of your marathon shopping, do dress comfortably, preferably in loose clothing so you don't feel constricted. You might consider slip-on shirts and pants, perhaps in a drawstring style. Also, try to wear a fanny pack rather than carrying a purse. Purses can weigh you down causing your shoulders and arms to wear out quickly. On the other hand, a fanny pack will easily hold your wallet and credit cards plus essentials like tissues, lip balm and a comb.

Also consider bringing along a bottle of water so you can get something into your stomach that will help you to keep going. This type of shopping is always going to require a lot of standing on your feet and walking so you definitely don't want to get dehydrated. Drinking sodas provides a caffeine and sugar kick, but when they begin to wear off, you'll start feeling lethargic and tired. Also bring yourself a light snack or at least order something somewhat healthy at the food court or restaurant. When you keep your energy level up, you'll be able handle getting through the entire day with energy to spare.

Lastly, employ safety practices when going to and from your car. If you're loaded down with bags, you should consider asking the mall or store's customer service department for a security escort to your car for safety reasons. The last thing you want is to get mugged. You should also keep all your purchases out of sight by putting them in the car's trunk or at least hidden somewhere out of sight, which will help to deter thieves.

Bet you didn't realize how much was involved when preparing for a marathon shopping day, did you? Yes, it does take a lot of careful planning to make the most of your time. So put this plan of action into effect and you'll have a great time and truly enjoy your shopping experience feeling comfortable and relaxed.
