Shopping for Those Big Ticket Items

from: Maxx Family Life

If you're looking to purchase a big-ticket item, it's always preferable to do some homework and gather as much information as possible before going out shopping on impulse. Here's some suggestions that should help save you some time and money.

Start by researching all the brands you're interested in and when you're shopping around, make sure you ask as many questions as needed. Compare all the features and options and get a test drive if possible. This is especially true when purchasing a car. Take it for a drive so you can get a feel for how it drives and whether you feel comfortable with the style. Once you've tested a few different models, you can do additional research online or at the library.

Get yourself a few copies of review magazines and check appropriate websites to read up on different models. Compare the pros and cons of each product and talk to your friends and family to get theri advice and recommendations. Of course, you're also going to have to set a budget for the big-ticket item. Yes, your purchase is going to cost a lot more than a few dollars, but for every big-ticket item, you can still decide whether to spend $200 or $2000 on a refrigerator or mattress.

The first thing to consider is the quality of the item. Check store with good reputations since they will provide warrantees and return policies for defective goods. At the store, check out their floor models to determine its quality and ease of use. If you're interested in a specific mattress, don't be afraid to lie on it for a while even if you feel silly. Let's face it, you're going to have to sleep on this mattress for a long time, so you have be sure it's going to be the one you really want.

One thing you should be afraid to do is to go online to check out big-ticket items. There are now an abundance of websites who offer free shipping on big-ticket items, which can save you more than $50 for each item. You can even use this for bargaining when you go physical stores who may offer to beat the lowest online price so they can remain competitive.

Now that you've chosen your big ticket item, make sure you're aware of the shipping policy by reading the small print carefully before signing the contract. Don't forget to read the small print and ask any questions you might have it something isn't clear. After all, it's your money.

Finally, since you're purchasing a big-ticket item, it's always prudent to see if you can negotiate a discount. Sellers want to sell to you for a good price, and you, of course, want the get the best deal you can. So bargain for a lower price or try to find different discounts being offered by the store such as discounts for seniors, the military, student discounts aond so on.
