Shopping Tips for Back to School Supplies
from: Maxx Family LifeGetting yourself ready for back to school shopping can be a big hassle, but it doesn't have to be. One way to handle this successfully is to first consider timing. Waiting until the last two weeks before school starts to pick up the school items needed isn't the way to go. Lots of parents have realized they can start purchasing what they need well in advance of the next school year. If you planning carefully, you will not only save time and money, but your sanity as well.
Keep in mind that consumables can be purchased any time of the year, such as paper, crayons, notebooks, construction paper, pencils, pens etc. items that are regularly used during the school year that eventually need to be replenished. If keep an eye on the ads and circulars for your local retail and office supply stores, you should be able to pick up some bargains. Get yourself a big plastic tub to keep these items in to ensure you have a supply on hand all year-round for your kids.
If you have a college student, careful planning ahead is sure to save you time and money. The usual items they will regularly need include toiletries, office supplies, clothing, medicines such as cold remedies and aspirin, clothing and probably a few small appliances. These items can go on sale any time of the year, so be prepared to take advantage and buy them in bulk when they're at a reduced price. The saving will really add up if you buy them during their off-season sales.
Clothing is often the most costly item for back to school essential items. There are lots of ways to save money on clothing that are both practical and stylish. One option many parents are discovering is buying a complete wardrobe from an online auction site such as eBay. Often you'll be able to buy lots of new or nearly new designer items at a fraction of their retail cost.
You can also save some dollars while still looking good by shopping at thrift stores. For designer labels, shop at thrift stores in high-end neighborhoods. And don't forget to check out the stores that sell gently used items that still look great at slightly higher prices than the Goodwill or Salvation Army.
You will also save by shopping for clothing at end of season clearance sales. If your child is still growing, you should be picking up clothing a size or two larger so they'll fit next season. Items that are usually highly reduced include swimwear, t-shirts, shorts and undergarments. Fall clothing sales are a good time for snowsuits, hats, gloves and jackets at cost a reduced cost for next year.
Families are also discovering the benefits of having exchange parties with their friends and neighbors. Rather than putting on a garage sale, neighbors with kids get together and exchange clothing their kids have outgrown. This is also a great idea for dance outfits and sports equipment. Plan a get together before school starts and after it ends each year so you can all exchange play clothing, jeans, sweatshirts, boots, etc. and any items that no longer fit.
So, the key for saving is to plan your back to school shopping strategy much earlier in the year. By doing this, you won't have to get stressed out during the weeks before the next school year begins. Your children will have everything they need and you won't have to spend any time in those long lines at the stores.
