Shop for Kids Clothes So They Last
from: Maxx Family LifeIt's that ongoing dilemma of parents who buy their toddler a sweater and within a week the child has already outgrown the item. So most parents are going to want to know how to shop for kids clothing so they last long enough not break the budget.
Of course, when you look at kids clothing hang in the stores they look so cute that parents often buy them on impulse. If tend to do a lot of impulse shopping, try buying your child's outfit a size larger so she can grow into them. If she's a 24-month-old toddler, why not purchase a 3T outfit and roll up the sleeves or pant cuffs and then roll them down as she grows.
Always try to purchase versatile outfits. Determine whether a particular outfit is seasonal or not. For example, is it likely your child will wear a thin summer dress during a blizzard? Of course not, which means she'll likely outgrow the dress by the following summer. On the other hand, if the dress can be worn for both summer and winter weather, you'll certainly get more for you money. Buy colors you can match up with your child's other clothing. A good example is white, which matches most outfits and can therefore be worn more often.
It's always a good idea to keep clothes in storage if you expect to have another child. If your second child is the same gender as your first, then the cloths you have in storage can do double duty and be worn again. However, if your second child isn't the same gender, just use unisex outfits and add a bow to your daughter's hair.
Never underestimate the huge reductions on the clearance rack at the back of a children's clothing store. Often these items are "last season's" outfits but they're marked down significantly, so why not stock up on the size your child will be next year. If your daughter is going to be 3 1/2 next summer, buy everu 4T outfit you can find that's on sale for next year. If any of these items work just as well during the winter, keep them out. At that age, it she not going to mind wearing last season's clothing.
You should probably have a look at garage sales. Lots of parents are trying to get rid of perfectly good and sometimes only "worn once" clothing for just the few coins in your purse. You can take advantage of these grage sales to stock up on larger sizes for your child and store them until your child has grown enough to wear them. However, hit the garage sale circuit early because lots of other mothers and grandmothers haunt the garage sales in your town and know enough to grab every sock, shoe and clothing item from these eager sellers.
If you some nice friends who just happen to have older children, never ever say NO if they offer you some free clothing. Accept these hand-me-down gifts and separate the clothes your child will be able to wear and give the rest away. Remove any stains and clean them before storing them away for your child when they get old enough to wear them.
Once you've loaded up on these larger sized clothes, compare the clothing since some will be made smaller and some larger depending on where they were manufactured. Separate them based on the size and place them in storage containers, making sure you label each container clearly. This way you won't have any problem finding that 3T once your child starts struggling to fit into her 2T outfits.
