Signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Children

from: Maxx Family Life

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a disorder that mainly affects the colon or the larger intestines which is the area of the digestive system that stores stools.

Since this condition is termed a syndrome, it's characterized be a number of symptoms for which the root causes aren't exactly known.

Even though this condition is relatively common among North Americans, there's still no specific evidence that is able to produce effective treatments. There are those who believe that a lack of research is the main reason there isn't enough knowledge about IBS.

Researchers often only deal with life-threatening conditions and since Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic condition that doesn't pose threats to the life of a patient, it's may be set aside for later research. In addition, the condition is a functional disorder which further complicates the discovery of viable treatment.

Functional disorders are often associated with subjective sensations and symptoms for which quantifiable measures can't be administered. In the case of pain, there's no objective factor that can be studied for pain caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome, unlike painful ulcers that damage the tissues of the intestines.

Also, being a functional disorder, there can be no physical manifestations of the disorder since everything lies in the abnormality of functions of the digestive system, particularly the colon. With Irritable Bowel Syndrome in children, as well as in adults, the colon muscles and nerves are extra sensitive, which means any substance that can't be tolerated by the muscles may cause adverse effects on the system itself.

Another factor contributing to the lack of knowledge of the root cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is the varied clinical presentations of the patients. Some may have diarrhea-dominated IBS while others have constipation-dominated IBS, both of which should be studied and treated separately.

Thought IBS is more found in people 20 years or older, it can also be observed in children. However, the symptoms are usually milder. Often, aggravated diarrhea or constipation is mistakened for Irritable Bowel Syndrome so it's important that once the child has the signs or any condition closely resembling IBS, a doctor's assistance should be sought.

The two main symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in children are constipation and diarrhea (or the combination of both) and crampy sensation within the abdominal area.

Diarrhea is the sudden change in the frequency of bowel movements often characterized with a sudden and uncontrollable urge to evacuate stool that normally leads to incontinence. Diarrhea is also characterized with fluid-like stool that are supposed to be easier to release. Incomplete evacuation may also be felt and immediate expulsion is needed right after the first bowel movement.

For these cases, parents should assist in the whole process to avoid complications. Diarrhea can lead to complications including dehydration or loss of substantial water in the body. Seek medical advice immediately if this situation is observed.

Constipation, on the other hand, is the condition wherein there's a compaction of stool, which means the stool is too hard to pass through the anus. The immediate treatment is to add extra amounts of dietary fiber in the food to add bulk to the stool. If this is the primary sign of IBS your child, it's best to check if he's skipped bowel movements in the last several days.

There's no need to be fearful of IBS in your child. There is no direct threat to the general health of you kid since it is a chronic condition. However, to avoid aggravated discomfort, try to have the condition treated eary.
