from: Maxx Family Life

When it comes to "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" many people are confused as to what this condition entails, not understanding the various symptoms associated with the term. So what exactly is Irritable Bowel Syndrome? To understand this condition, learn about these factors:

1) Symptoms: These are the typical manifestations of IBS in human. In a way, these symptoms tell what IBS is by showing how it affects a person's body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn't actually a disease but rather a "syndrome" because it's mainly a group of symptoms. The facts are, some symptoms of IBS actually contradict each other in that some people suffering from IBS experience diarrhea while others experience constipation.

2) Causes: As we've established, Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn't a disease but a disorder. This is important to realize because many people misunderstand Irritable Bowel Syndrome because they don't really understand its causes. Some people think IBS is caused by eating certain types of food that doesn't agree with a person's digestion. Others believe that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is caused by a virus or bacteria of some kind.

However, what you really need to understand is that IBS isn't really "caused" by anything, it's a state in which your bowels don't function properly, which leads to the various symptoms people experience.

3) Triggers: To truly know what Irritable Bowel Syndrome is, you need to understand what trigger its symptoms. There are two main triggers of IBS:

a) Stress: Stress has been proven to have a major impact on the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. In fact, simply the stress caused when you know you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one fact that can trigger symptoms, which is why counseling is one of the treatments and it's also why people often seek out alternative therapies for their treatment, including yoga or acupuncture to help relieve stress.

b) Food: Eating the wrong type of food is another trigger. Foods with high fat content should be avoided by people with IBS along with alcohol and caffeine.

c) Treatments: Now that you know what Irritable Bowel Syndrome is, you'll want to know about various treatments used to relieve these symptoms. There are drugs used to help stop one or more of its symptoms, however, you must remember that Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn't a disease, so it's incurable.

Anyone suffering with this condition can only try to keep the symptoms at bay by using different treatments, such as a specialized diet and relaxation techniques.

Understanding all of these factors should clarify exactly what Irritable Bowel Syndrome is all about.
