The Connection Between Food and Irritable Bowel Syndromefrom: Maxx Family Life
A common misunderstading is that foods cause irritable bowel syndrome. This misconception says the main connection between foods & irritable bowel syndrome is that the condition is caused by eating certain types of foods. However, this isn't true since Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional disorder. This means it lies in the function of the bowels and not in the foods eaten. In fact, no one really knowns what cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
So what exactly is the connection between foods and IBS?
The main thing to remember is that even though foods aren't the cause of irritable bowel syndrome, certain foods serve as triggers for its symptoms. These symptoms includes abdominal pains, diarrhea or constipation, and sudden changes in stool frequency.
Here's a list of some of the foods that can trigger these symptoms:
1) Foods High in Fat-Content: IBS sufferers should keep fat content of food below 25% because fat is simply the best (or worst) stimulant of digestion. When fat is enters the stomach, it quickly triggers your colon to start contracting. Therefore, since Irritable Bowel Syndrome is more about the function of the intestines, this reaction triggers the symptoms of this condition.
2) Coffee: Caffine or decaf, it doesn't matter. People don't realize that decaf coffee contains an enzyme that can irritate the gut. However, regular coffee is usually even worse because caffeine is also an irritant. The bottom line is that drinking coffee, if you have irritable bowel syndrome, is basically inviting pain into your life.
3) Alcohol: is actually okay in small amounts, such as the amount used for cooking. However, alcohol is a very effective irritant, especially on an empty stomach.
Of course, this isn't the only connection between foods and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Since certain foods trigger IBS, the good news is there are also foods that help minimize the symptoms.
Start with, eat foods with high soluble fiber content, which will aid with proper digestion of food. Some people aren't very enthusiastic about eating soluble fiber because it's said to be a laxative. However, the reality is that soluble fiber is actually more of a stabilizer that helps prevent both diarrhea and constipation.
Too many people often tend to see the negative side of a relationship such as that between foods & IBS. However, it should be reemphasized that food per se doesn't trigger the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. A person with irritable bowel syndrome simply has to find the right types of food that will minimize the symptoms of this condition.
Foods and Irritable Bowel Syndrome need balance in order for there to be any benefits. Insoluble fiber, for instance: many people know that insoluble fiber is a trigger for IBS, however, it's also known that insoluble fiber is found in fruits and vegetables -- all healthy foods. This leaves someone having to with the dilemma of choosing between the nutrition provided by insoluble fiber foods and the pain they may cause.
However, by eating these foods with a quantity of soluble fiber, a person dealing with IBS can easily avoid the pain of the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome while still getting the nourishment needed. So now you know the connection between foods and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
