Acupuncture Treatments for Children

from: Maxx Family Life

One of major responsibilities of a parent is to do their utmost to ensure their children's health and happiness. One treatment parents might consider is acupuncture, which has proven to be a good preventative technique to cure various symptoms. You might be surprised to learn that In China, there are acupuncture professionals who are only paid as long as their clients remain healthy!

As a parent, you might be wondering if a child is actually a potential acupuncture client. The fact is, most children have no problems with an acupuncture treatment, finding it both easy and even enjoyable. This applies especially to younger childen because acupuncture needles aren't painful, and they don't have an the fear of needles that some adults do. Another positive is that children seem to have more of an awareness of their bodies than adults, which often means they can actully feel themselves getting better quite quickly. The improvement in their energy after a treatment is often very clear to a child.

Are there any differences in an acupuncture treatment for children? Generally, the treatment is similar, such as the locations where needles are inserted in order to provide the treatment. The needles will be inserted at different depths, depending on which treatment is being given, from just under the skin up to a few inches. However, needle insertion doesn't hurt in the least. Some might describe an insertion as a "slight pinch", but once the needle is in, there is no sense of it until it's moved.

The number of needles and treatments required for children is usually fewer, since their active bodies tend to respond quicker and need less stimulation. Therefore children who have acupuncture treatments often have noticeable and postitive results very quickly.

An acupuncture diagnosis uses several aspects including the physical symptoms, the pulse and condition of the tongue, as well as such behavioral symptoms as anger, depression, aggression, plus external physical conditions. One goal of acupuncture is bringing the whole person into harmony -- physical, emotional, mental, and social. Thus when attention is paid to the child's whole mental and physical well being, it's of great benefit to the child as well as the family.

A child can be brought in for an acupuncture visit to help maintain both physical symptoms and behavioral problem. Bed wetting is a common problem that often responds well to acupuncture treatments. It's interesting to note that most parents are aware their child has negative emotions, which they may assume comes from wetting the bed. However, parents report that, upon reflection, the actual sadness or other emotion preceded their child's bedwetting by several weeks. This isn't always the case, but there's often a connection.

You may want to discuss with your acupuncture practitioner your child vaccinations. More vaccines seem to be available all the time for a wider number of diseases, such as the recent chicken pox vaccine. Most acupuncture practitioners maintain a list of vaccines they recommend, such as the vaccine against polio. It's worthwhile discussing these various vaccines with your acupuncture practitioner to gain more knowledge as to what are the right decisions for your entire family.
