A First Visit to an Acupuncture Clinic

If so, you're one of many people get acupuncture treatments to deal with a number of symptoms including persistent pain, stress, or to help with other problems such as weight loss. People in China often visit their acupuncturist for a regular tune up that helps them stay healthy. It's interesting to note that some Chinese acupuncturists get paid if their client stays healthy, rather than if a client has symptoms. Here's a quick tour of a modern American acupuncture clinic.
The clinic looks like any other professional office, and you'll be taken to a room and comfortably seated in a chair. Your acupuncturist begins the diagnosis covering two major parts areas, a physical observation and a discussion of your symptoms and environment. The physical observation includes taking your pulse and observing your tongue. Unlike a traditional doctor, you will have your pulse taken on both wrists, and at several points on each wrist. Your pulse is taken both near the surface of your wrist as well as more deeply below the surface. These observations are noted and used along with the discussion to compile your file.
You should discuss several things during your first visit. If you're seeking treatment for a particular symptom or set of symptoms, these should be part of your discussion. Perhaps you have a constant pain in your ankle, as an example. The pain may not be constant during the entire day but may ebb and wane depending on time of day.
Your pain might increase or decrease because of specific activities, and you should observe these as much as possible. You might think walking would increase the pain, but sometimes walking isn't as much of a problem as having to stand for long periods of time, such as a cashier in a store. The pain might even change depending on the times of the month, and that should also be mentioned to the acupuncture practitioner.
Also report cause and effect, if any Also consider if stress is having an effect, since it's possible the pain started or increased after you got a new supervisor at work. A diagnosis for acupuncture includes physical, emotional, social and mental components. So it's good to be prepared when visiting an acupuncture office with all the information you feel is related to your symptoms.
Once the initial diagnosis is completed, a plan of treatments is constructed. Depending on your specific symptom plus other personal information, your first treatment might be the same day, or you may be required to return on anothr to start treatments. The time of day and the particular days for acupuncture treatments are carefully selected in order to achieve the best result possible.
If you do have an initial treatment, it will be painless, and usually takes less than an hour, often less. The acupuncture practitioner inserts very slim needles at specific locations, which will remain for the as long as your symptoms require. Even with the needles in you, you won't be aware of them. Inserting and removing needles is also painless, or on the rare occassion, perhaps a slight twinge, but nothing more.
While you're being treated, you may feel more relaxed, or have a buzz of energy, or slightly warmer where the needle is inserted, or no different at all. However, the needles are doing their job to regulate and rebalance the circulation in your body. Enjoy your treatment, knowing that each visit will get you closer to improved health.
