Writing the Entrepreneurial Resume
from: Maxx Family LifeWriting a resume isn't just for job hunters. If you're a freelancer or an entrepreneur just starting your profession, you should have a resume that shows the work experience and education that sets you apart as a skilled person who can complete the work your potential clients require. You'll also need this resume as part of your business plan package you'll present to financial institutions or venture capitalists when looking for capital to get your business off the ground.
In addition, you may need to write a resume in order to entice work partners to join you in a limited or full partner way. If they don't readily understand from your resume that you have what it takes to succeed, it may be difficult convincing them to participate in your business venture.
As you can see resume writing has more purposes than just job hunting. Let's take a look at how you, the freelancer or entrepreneur, can put together a resume that will get the job done.
In the same way as resume writing for a job hunt, start your freelance resume with a specific objective. Remember, your resume is your marketing tool and a brochure about you. Before you have that first client to use as a referral and a testimonial, all you have is your resume to indicate your training and your expertise. Writing a clear resume objective that outlines the types of client jobs you can perform based on your qualifications is teh best way to secure those clients along with obtainin the necessary funding needed to startup and grow your new business venture.
Keep in mind, however, that writing your resume isn't to get a client assignment, rather it's to secure an opportunity to show a client in person what it's you can do for them. Your resume isn't to get a loan either, but to obtain an opportunity to meet with lenders who will take the time to listen to your expectations for success and details of how they can help.
A freelance resume, as with a job resume, must be attractive to the eye. Bullet points and short sentences used sparingly will help immensely. This is a great way to document your skill set or your education.
Perhaps the most important plan for your resume writing, whether you're trying to acquire clients, find a job, or apply for a loan, is to proofread it over and over and then ask two other people whose opinion and communication skills you trust to read your resume with a critical eye.
