Homeschooling Financing

from: Maxx Family Life

When it comes to homschooling there is usually less of a definite or structured curriculum, and so it's easy to assume that homeschooling is cheaper than sending your children to public school. However, this isn't generally true. Although homeschooling doesn't follow a particular text, this isn't really a factor when it comes to finance.

Trying to give your children a state-of-the-art education that competes with regular school goers is going to naturally be more expenses. The truth is, the cost of educating a child at home is actually high. Purchasing up-to-date and current textbooks, course materials, a reference library, computer equipment, special lighting, furniture etc. costs money. However, the cost is going to be less when the time comes to homeschooling a second child. If you add these expenses to additional tuition cost for tutors who need to be hired come to teach specific subjects parents are unable to handle, such as higher-level math or science, the final cost can be unexpectedly high.

Another important factor should also be taking into consideration, which actually increases homeschooling costs further. This is the requirement for having one parent tied to the house dedicated to providing education deprives the family of a potential second income. The average homeschooling teacher is usually a lady with a college degree, which means she could easily earn $35,000 per annum or more. Perhaps it's interesting to note here that most families with more than 2 children don't usually opt for homeschooling.

However, it should be noted that there are families who have successful completed homeschooling for their children at a low rates. Genereally lower costs will dependent on the size of the family, the support group available, the type and availability of the materials used. If successive children can reuse the materials, costs will go down. Course materials can be purchased from vendors of homeschooling materials plus a membership in a public library, theatre, concert, ballet and other cultural events will also help to reduce costs. It also, with the right situation, to barter expertise. A good example of this would be when the mother of an 8-year old gives dancing classes, and her daughter receives drawing classes in return. Having support groups readily available also allows you to share the cost of field trips, science projects and fairs.

Regardless of the cost, advocates of homeschooling say the benefits are definitely worth whatever the costs turn out to be. When parents are in control of the knowledge their child receive as well as their schedule, it gives them a lot of freedom and power. Children, as well as their parents, will benefit from this mutually enriching time together.
