Homeschooling Hours

from: Maxx Family Life

How many, how often and when? These are some of the most asked questions regarding homeschooling hours. Flexibility is, of course, one of the key underlying principles behind homeschooling. Flexibility applies to both the curriculum as well as how many hours. It's normal that parents, especially those just starting with homeschooling, feel their children should be at "school" during the same hours regular school-goers are at school. This isn't just fallacious, but could be damaging and counter-productive.

An often ignored, but major drawback of the public schooling system is the total waste of time and energy it causes. Too many periods are just wasted away resulting in the child effectively getting only 1-3 hours of study each day. There are then days when studies become too intensive and other days when it's nothing but games with no work getting done at all. There's just too much 'invisible wastage' involved.

It's a good idea to, early on in your homeschooling practice, work out a schedule and stay with these same hours everyday. Having a regular routine makes it easier to learn while, at the same time, gives structure to the learning experience. It also constantly reminds the students that their parents are strict about their learning. Having a regular routine will also allow your child to free his mind from other activities and concentrate on studies, since he knows a specific time is strictly set aside for learning.

How many hours you spend will depend on the curriculum you've chosen and the learning style that best suits your child. If you're dealing with a complex subject, you may have to sit with the child for a longer period. Using various techniques, there may be times when it's necessary to demonstrate what you're trying to teach. For example, a lesson in Algebra is likely to take longer than a lesson in English or Geography.

Homeschooling doesn't refer to the practice of sitting in front of the books and learning just from the printed matter. It can also include field trips, viewing documentaries, visiting factories and libraries all of which can be an important part of the homeschooling process. It's also a good idea to intersperse these activities so that learning becomes fun and not a drugery. You could choose to complete a few hours of textbook learning in the morning and dedicate the afternoons to more open activities.

Since it's a fact that too many public school hours are wasted in meaningless activities ranging from talking to extra-curricular activities, it's not necessary to allow public school hours dictate the time you'll be spending teaching your child at home. The fact is, at home, he/she is getting higher-quality one-on-one time that is much more productive. About 1-3 hours of study is likely enough at the primary level, however, it's true that the more hours put in, the more learning takes place. This is one of the reasons homeschooled children are usually much smarter and more balanced than children who attend public school.
