What is Homeschooling?

from: Maxx Family Life

'Homeschooling' is in reference to the process in which one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by their parents or legal guardian, or a member of either household. Laws that define homeschooling vary from State to State as do the legal requirements for establishing a homeschool.

Most children actually start process of learning long before they are old enough to go to school. If fact, many children are already familiar with their alphabets, the names of animals, how to distinguish colors and even more complicated knowledge before they go to public school. This is often due to the hard work and diligence of a member of the family who's spent some time teaching the child. Thus homeschooling is simply a natural progression from what they learned as a small child. Rather than sending their children to a public school, parents put together their own curriculum and teach their kids the way that best suit the child. This is homeschooling in its simplest form.

If you're considering homeschooling for your child or children, there are certain important matters you should first consider. To start, it's a good idea to first meet with parents of other homeschoolers, ask questions and find out what they consider the pros and cons of homeschooling. Determine for yourself why you'd want to adopt this method of teaching. This is very important to know because the success of the program your put together could well depend on how clear and sincere your purpose might be to keep your children out of public school.

You should next consider the expenses of homeschooling. Depending on a number of factors, it could cost from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand every year. Even more important, homeschooling will effectively remove any job opportunity that might be available for one of the parents. It's obvious that one parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the homeschool, however, finding a home-based business could be a great alternative to a regular job.

It's important for you determine if you're qualified to take on homeschooling for your children. Teaching could be considered a continuation of your own learning process and with access to the internet, there's lots of information available plus various books and resources for those interested in homeschooling. Research and study various methods of homeschooling and choose one that is most suited to your family's needs. It helps if you can determine what learning style works best for your child. Finally, ask your child/children what they feel about homeschooling before you take on this task.

Every state has laws regarding homeschooling. For example, in North Carolina, you must first file a 'Notice of Intent' before you can start a home school. You must to say whether the school is a 'Private church' school or a 'qualified non-public school'. The person or persons providing the education must have at least a high school diploma and an annual record will have to be maintained of the child's attendance and disease immunization. Each year, the child is required to undergo a standardized test plus a student attending the eleventh grade must take a nationally standardized test. These are the requirements in North Carolina, but it's should give you an idea of what homeschooling will usually require.

Homeschooling may appear to be a lot of fun and with total freedom, however, things are seldom as simple as they seem. Homeschooling adds a lot of responsibility and hard work to a parents workload. Despite this, a successfully operated homeshcool has a strong opportunity to forge a strong bond of love and respect between parent and child, while providing your child with the best type of education that suits him or her best.
