This is the reason why government does what it can to help those students who want an education, but don't have the means. Providing student aids, including jobs, scholarships and college grant money, government provides these students with an opportunity to do their best to get a proper education. You might be wondering at this point what is grant money? How are these grants different from student loans and scholarships?
College grants a actually a type of student aid awarded to deserving individuals. The Federal Government, nonprofit civic groups as well as private institutions offer money to students, usually based on their economic need.
However, contrary to what you might think, college grant money is quite different than a student loan. One main difference is that qualifing for a grant doesn't require you to pay back any money received, whereas a student loan must be repaid within a specified period of time negotiated between you and your loan provider. This, of course, means that parents and students woould rather recieve college grant money over a student loan.
When determining how much of college grant money a student will receive, colleges and grant programs usually factor in the parents' income plus the average cost of college. This gives them a basic estimate of how much money a student should receive in the form of a grant.
Most college grant money programs determine a specific amount which is then sent to colleges and universities where the grant is offered. A student who receives a grant can receive the money in the form of a check sent by mail or the college can credit the amount of the grant to the student's account.
In order to be considered for federal financial assistance to receive college grant money, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the FAFSA. You can to this online at the FAFSA.ed.gov website. An FAFSA can be filed no earlier than January 1st of the year you'll be attending.
However, be pay attention to the dates you'll be filing for college grant money. There are times when the deadlines announced by the federal student aid programs and your college of choice may differ, so be on the safe side and file your application long before any of the dates.
In addition to the FAFSA, there might be other forms you'll need to submit. If you're an incoming freshman, you might have to complete the CSS Profile Application required by many private colleges. A CSS profile gives administrators a broader set of data from which to determine your eligibility for institutional need-based assistance. In general, the Profile application becomes available by the mid October. You can register and apply online at CollegeBoard.org.
Using the processed data from either the FAFSA or the CSS Profile enables colleges to figure out your eligibility for college grant money using your household, demographic, and financial data as the basis for their decision.
