Sibling Rivalry Between Children and Newborns
from: Maxx Family LifeParents often discover that when a new baby arrives in the household, they suddenly start having trouble with their other children. This is perfectly natural, so don't be shocked if it happens in your family.
An older child may suddenly start to backslide, doing things they haven't done in a long time, such as wetting the bed or sucking their thumb or fingers. This is natural, and actually quite common.
There are several measures you can implement to help older children cope with suddenly having a newborn arrive. It's a good idea to prepare your older children for dealing with the arrival of a baby as soon as you can.
Provide them with opportunities to talk about the new baby in order to help them understand what's happening by allowing them to ask questions and then giving them honest answers. The more prepared your other children are, the better they'll be able to cope with a newborn brother or sister.
Some backsliding is okay, and dealing with this situation will be much easier if you don't make a big deal about the behavior. If your older child suddenly adopts behaviors you don't approve of, remember, some of these actions are simply them trying to cope with a new addition to the family, and most of these behaviors will disappear once the adjustment is made.
By not calling too much attention or making a big deal out of it, your child will soon go back to their normal behavior before the new baby arrived.
So, make sure your older child has a good transition to the new baby and is prepared ahead of time by keeping them involved. Let them help get the household ready for the new baby, and let them take on tasks that give them the feeling they have some control.
Having them help you pick out toys for the new baby and decide what color to paint the new baby's room are excellent ways to keep your older children involved and to give them ownership of the new baby.
You should also emphasize the older sibling's role, and help them feel proud of their new status as big brother or sister once the newborn arrives.
