Newborns and Medicine
from: Maxx Family LifeMost parents have a difficult time when choosing medicines for their newborn. It's important for you to always be concerned with what you're giving your newborn baby. A newborn should never get medicine made for adults, or even made for children or older babies. Medicine is something that can be very dangerous to your newborn, so take every precaution.
First, check with your doctor before giving your baby any type of medicine. Even medicine made for newborns might have some effects you don't want your baby to be dealing with. Your baby's doctor is a very important person to consult. The doctor will be able to tell you what your baby needs, and help you make sure your baby gets the right dose of the medicine.
It's also important to remember that you should only give your baby medicine that is exactly meant to do whatever needs to be done. Medicine for colds is going to be much different than medicine that helps when your baby is teething, even if it seems to you they do the same thing. Always follow the directions included with the medicine, unless your baby's doctor has told you otherwise.
Be sure you carefully read the information that comes with the medicine you're giving your baby and also be sure you're carefully watching for any side effects listed. If you have any questions about side effects, or if you think the medicine isn't helping your baby, be sure to call your doctor. Give your baby all of the help he/she needs in order to get healthy as soon as possible. A newborn relies on you, so don't let your child down.
You should also know that when a doctor prescribes medicine for your baby, it's critical that you follow the directions carefully. If your baby seems to be gettin better, but there are still doses left of the medicine, follow the directions and continue to give your baby the medicine, because often symptoms disappear before the sickness is actually completely healed.
The rest of the doses of the medicine are actually quite important for you to give your baby. Again, with any questions at all, contact your child's pediatrician and in an emergency, don't hesitate to call 911.
