Nephew to Son and Cousin to Daughter: Adopting Relatives

from: Maxx Family Life

There are many reasons that you might want to adopt a child instead of have a child of your own. If you aren't able to have children or if you decide that you would rather become a parent to someone who doesn't have parents of their own, adoption is a good option.

However, there are other reasons that you might want to adopt a child as well. If you have had a family situation in which a member of your family dies or is no longer able to care for their children, you might want to consider adopting a child that is already a relative of yours.

Sometimes these situations arise because you are feeling that you want to keep children in a family, and it might be that the only way that you can keep the children in the family. If your siblings or other people in your family can no longer care for their children, it might be that those children are going to have to go into foster care because their parents are no longer able to care for them. If you don't want your family to have to go into foster care, you might consider trying to take custody of your relative's child as much as you can so that they can stay in the family.

Remember that in these situations it is often important that you call a family meeting and talk to all of the family members that have been affected by this. It might become important that you get a family consensus about what to do with the children, and who should care for them. This might become important later on, because often taking care of children is something that makes family ties strained.

Remember that if you end up caring for a child of a family member temporarily, you might end up adopting them in the long run. If you are going to do this, make sure that it is something you really want to do for the rest of your life. Like a normal adoption, once you sign the paperwork, that child will be your responsibility forever. Make sure that you have discussed this with the children and taken into account what is most important to them as well. It is going to be a family affair. Also make sure the birth parents understand their rights (and lack of rights) for that child.
